Enjoying a sunny day for gardening, Doreen Hogins weeds around the red tulips growing in her garden Thursday at the corner of Highland Drive and Glacier Avenue. Temperatures Thursday came within three degrees of the record. They reached 68 degrees at the Federal Building and 70 degrees at the airport, according to meteorologist Aaron Jacobs at the National Weather Service in Juneau. The record was 72 degrees downtown in 1995 and 73 degrees at the airport in 1993. The latest run of warm weather is due to upper-level high pressure over the Gulf of Alaska and dry winds coming from the northwest. Longer daylight hours have also warmed the area, Jacobs said.
