Do we really need the street lights on?

Posted: Wednesday, May 14, 2008

So, I look at my neighborhood at 9 p.m. It's almost dark out. Not a light showing from any of my neighbors as far as my eyes can see. What must they be doing in such a dark existense? Then I look at the city's street lights. They are shining brightly!

Luckily, we live in a town that has a very low crime rate. Our kids are good kids. Our neighbors are good neighbors. Everyone is pitching in to save energy. So why, why, why is our city wasting valuable energy and money lighting up the way for us? We all have headlights on our vehicles, our bikes have lights, our dogs have red flashing lights on them. And most of us are asleep soon after the sun goes down.

And yet the city continues to light the way for us. They even light my cul de sac, where all that light does is shine in my window and let me read for free. Should I have that luxury when most of the city can only read during the day? Why, why, why?
