I cannot emphasize enough how upsetting and uncharacteristic of our sole representative in Congress, Don Young, to lead the charge for another federal ``land grab'' through HR 701. This bill means that $6 billion of oil revenues that usually go into the U.S. treasury will be used by the government to purchase private lands. Then there will need to be increased taxation at the federal level to replace that money.
Another fact to keep in mind is that the government has a history of forcing owners to sell through some means. Government buy-offs are not usually friendly as projected. Also, additional government purchases will cut off access to private lands.
Although Don Young is supposed to be a conservative Republican, he has the full support of the environmentalist Democrats in Congress who view this bill of locking up lands further as a dream come true.
For more information on this, get on the Web and go to World Net Daily ``Massive land-acquisition bill before House'' by Sarah Foster, Tuesday, May 9, 2000. You need to move on this as the vote could be any day.
Rep. Don Young's phone number is 202-225-5765 and the fax is 202-225-0425. The e-mail address is firstname.lastname@example.org.
Be sure to contact other conservatives in Congress to let them know that you as an Alaska do not support HR 701. Speaker Dennis Hastert (202-225-2976) would be one to contact since his office does the scheduling. Another of many would be Representative Tom DeLay (202-225-5241), who is the majority whip. The U.S. Capitol Switchboard is 202-224-3121. The Congressmen have 24-hour message machines. Do not delay.
