Three Tornado wrestlers win two state titles each

Three members of the Juneau Tornadoes Wrestling Club claimed a pair of state championships each during the Alaska USA State Wrestling Championships held May 4-5 at Sullivan Arena in Anchorage. Competition was held in Greco-Roman wrestling on Friday, with freestyle competition held on Saturday.

Jerrod Harvey claimed the junior division, 220-pound championship in Greco-Roman with a 3-1 decision victory over Daniel Dallemolle of Kotzebue. Harvey also on the freestyle title with a pin in 1 minute, 25 seconds over anchorage's Dustin Hendricks.

Jestin Hulegaard, who won a state title earlier this school year for Juneau-Douglas High School, claimed the cadet division, 143-pound title in Greco-Roman with a forfeit victory over Anchorage's Brant Jensen. Hulegaard also claimed the freestyle championship with a second-round technical fall over Brandon Therl of Fairbanks.

John Zuniga claimed the schoolboy division, 160-pound-plus championship in Greco-Roman with a pin in 1:48 over Jimmy Kutzer. Zuniga also won the freestyle title with a pin in 2:47 over Scott Thorpe.

The Tornadoes claimed one other state championship, as Jake Ritter claimed the schoolboy division, 174-pound title with a 34-second pin over an unknown opponent in Greco-Roman. Ritter also took second place in freestyle.

Many of Juneau's top wrestlers will compete at the national championships in June in Pocatello, Idaho.

Among other Juneau wrestlers, Ian Otness took third in Greco-Roman and sixth in freestyle in the novice, 65-pound division; Tessa Otness was third in Greco-Roman and didn't place in freestyle in the midget, 60-pound division; Alex Martin took third place in freestyle and didn't place in Greco-Roman in the midget, 42-pound division; Gerry Carrillo took second in Greco-Roman and sixth in freestyle in the schoolboy, 95-pound division; while Garrett Cox was sixth in freestyle and didn't place in Greco-Roman, but his division wasn't listed.

Also, Logan Harvey took fourth place in freestyle and didn't place in Greco-Roman in the schoolboy, 100-pound division; Jamen Hulegaard took second in freestyle and didn't place in Greco-Roman in the schoolboy, 105-pound division; Chilly Katasse competed in but didn't place in the freestyle or Greco-Roman events in an unlisted division; Tim Katasse was third in Greco-Roman and fourth in freestyle in the schoolboy, 160-pound-plus division; and John Kuterbach was second in both Greco-Roman and freestyle in the schoolboy, 130-pound division.

And, Phillip Moser took third in freestyle and didn't place in Greco-Roman in the novice, 112-pound division; Peter Muse was third in Greco-Roman and fifth in freestyle in the cadet, 174-pound division; Ryan Nicholas took second place in both Greco-Roman and freestyle in the schoolboy, 100-pound division; Robert Castillo took second place in freestyle and third in Greco-Roman in the cadet, 215-pound division; Geoff Hall was second in Greco-Roman and fourth in freestyle in the cadet, 215-pound division; and Wyatt Ojala took sixth place in freestyle and didn't place in Greco-Roman in the cadet, 167-pound division.
