Statesmen have not vanished completely

Letter to the editor

Posted: Tuesday, May 15, 2007

This is in response to Michael Lavering's May 4 letter, "Where have all the statesmen gone?"

Sound off on the important issues at

If Lavering wants a statesman who cares for the community, can speak to issues and has only the best interests of the people at heart, then he need look no further than Randy Wanamaker.

Wanamaker is willing to take the heat for decisions that effect long-term goals at the expense of short-term popularity. Not too many people in public office are willing to do that. I have had many conversations with Randy, and I admire him greatly for the energy he is willing to expend in trying to make Juneau and Alaska a better place. Not many people would want to place themselves in the position of taking criticism and printed ridicule for no personal gain.

Lavering wants to know where the statesmen are. One is right under his nose.
