Wright wins homebrew ribbons: Bill Wright, owner of the local homebrew supply store Gourmet Alaska in Nugget Mall, recently won two ribbons in the 2000 World Cup of Beer in San Francisco. The contest was sponsored by an area homebrew club.
Wright won first place for Pale Ale and second place for India Pale Ale, a stronger version with more hops and more malt. The first-place award qualifies Wright to enter the Masters Championship of Amateur Brewing to be held in February 2001.
Wright has been operating Gourmet Alaska for three years. The store primarily sells kitchenware but also some beer and winemaking supplies.
Rita Bowen wins award at UAS: Rita Bowen, assistant to the dean of students at the University of Alaska Southeast in Juneau, is one of three recipients statewide of the university's second annual ``Make Students Count'' service award.
Bowen is scheduled to receive her award June 8 at the annual board of regents meeting in Anchorage. She gets a cash award of $1,000 and two vouchers for travel on Alaska Airlines.
Three teachers get ASTF grants: Three teachers in Juneau were among 30 statewide receiving a total of $179,285 in grants from the Alaska Science & Technology Foundation for conducting scientific, technological or statistical projects in the classroom.
Included are Ted Wilson of Glacier Valley Elementary School, Lorrie Heagy of Juneau Community Charter School and Erik Lundquist of Juneau-Douglas High School.
Cameron back on Shee Atika board: Kenneth Cameron, a former director and board chairman for Shee Atika, the Native corporation for Sitka, was elected to a three-year term on the board of directors at the May 6 annual meeting.
Cameron replaces John Davis, who retired after 18 years on the board. Re-elected to the board were Marion Berry and Loretta Ness.
