Title and firm: Owner of Juneau Flyfishing Goods.
Services: The retail store is designed to outfit fly fishing enthusiasts with everything they would need to fly fish in local waters. ``Someone could come here with absolutely nothing and we could outfit them with clothes and equipment for a week in October, in the worst weather Southeast has to offer,'' said Brad Elfers, the sole proprietor of the shop. Along with rods, reels, flies, fly tying material, clothes, waders, wading boots and sunglasses, Elfers also offers fly fishing classes and books remote fishing trips for a handful of local outfitters.
Biographical information: Born in Seattle, Elfers became hooked on fly fishing as a teen-ager. After graduating from the University of Washington in 1992, he took a four-week tour of Alaska and decided to move north as soon as possible. He moved to Juneau and worked as a rafting guide on the Mendenhall River and as a ski instructor at Eaglecrest Ski Area in the winter. For the next two summers, he went north and guided raft trips down the Nenana River in Denali National Park while spending his winters in Juneau on the slopes of Eaglecrest. Starting in the summer of 1996, he remained in Southeast for the summer and worked as a fly fishing guide with Bear Creek Outfitters for the next two seasons. Along with working at Eaglecrest for four winters, Elfers also taught at local middle schools and at Juneau-Douglas High School as a substitute teacher. He opened Juneau Flyfishing Goods in 1998.
Family: Elfers is single.
Notable: More women are taking up the sport, Elfers said.
Quotable: ``Juneau probably has the best road system in Southeast for fly fishing. There are miles and miles of streams and lakes. You can just go out on the weekend, pick your spot and you probably won't see another person - unless you want to.''
Employees: Two part-time workers, along with Elfers.
