The Juneau Freewheelers Bicycle Club would like to remind riders and motorists alike that we would like to have a safe, responsible, friendly and fun cycling year.

Sound off on the important issues at

On flat surfaces, cyclists can be riding as fast as 35 mph. Cyclists ride with traffic and follow the same rules as motorists. Therefore, they do not stop at every turn-off or intersection as they are following the rules of the road. Turn-offs and intersections are common places where accidents occur, so we ask that all riders and drivers share the road and maintain motorist rules.

In the middle of the biking season last year, a member was seriously injured by a vehicle. And on Thursday, another member of the club was hit by a vehicle. These incidents took place at turn-offs where a vehicle cut in front of the rider.

Our members look forward to having a safe riding year.
