SITKA - Dr. Sonja Koukel, of the University of Alaska Southeast Cooperative Extension Service Juneau District, will lead a free food preservation program Thursday at the UAS Sitka campus, 1332 Seward Ave., Room 110.
From noon to 1 p.m., Koukel will demonstrate canning fish in jars. She will cover food safety issues and answer questions regarding home canning low acid foods. Cooperative Extension Service publications will be available. The presentation and materials are provided at no cost and the public is invited.
From 2 to 5:30 p.m., Koukel will provide pressure canner dial gauge testing. For safety's sake, dial gauges should be tested for accuracy every year. It's been about two years since I've provided this free service to the Sitka community. Now is a good time to get ready for the food preservation season.
Anyone unable to bring their gauges during the allotted time can drop them off at the Cooperative Extension Service office located on the Sitka Campus. For more information, contact Jen Weinlaeder, Sitka administrative assistant, at 907-747-9440.
