Dance party with Larry Siegel on Saturday
JUNEAU - Professional musician Larry Siegel from New York will be playing for an all-ages dance from 9 to 11 p.m. Saturday at Centennial Hall.
Siegel will sing and play guitar, backed by a drum machine, and guest musicians and singers may sit in as well.
``I play music from every decade, and I even take requests,'' he said. ``I'll go whatever direction people want to go. I know thousands of tunes - It's what I do for a living. It's easy to go in many different directions.''
Siegel has played professionally for more than 25 years. He's backed up Dolly Parton, Belinda Carlisle, Papa John Phillips, and performed on the ``Rosie O'Donnell Show'' and ``TV Nation.'' He's led shipboard bands aboard cruise ships and toured throughout Europe.
He's also a square dance caller, and said he might even call a square dance Saturday if people want.
Siegel, a member of the Eckankar clergy, is traveling to Juneau to participate in the Eckankar Alaska regional seminar this weekend at Centennial Hall. Eckankar is sponsoring the dance. The event will feature a soft drink and snack bar, and the suggested donation for admission is $5.
Theater and music groups hold auditions
JUNEAU - Perseverance Theatre, the Alaska Youth Choir and Janice D. Holst's Gold Nugget Revue are seeking performers for the upcoming seasons. All are holding auditions in coming weeks.
The Alaska Youth Choir auditions will be 4 to 7 p.m. Monday evening at Northern Light United Church. The group is for singers 8 to 16 years old with unchanged voices. Interested singers should prepare a short reading and bring a parent. The audition takes about 10 minutes. The group has a performing choir and a training choir, so experience is not as important as commitment and willingness to put in the time and effort. For information, or to set up an alternative time, call director Missouri Smyth at 780-5225.
Janice D. Holst seeks adult singers, dancers, actors and musicians for the summer tourist show, the Gold Nugget Revue. Performers work part time in the evening for this long-running ``Days of '98''-style show. Call Holst at 586-1462 for more information.
Perseverance Theatre will be holding general auditions for plays in the upcoming 2000-2001 season. The season includes at least one musical.
Performers should come with a one- to two-minute memorized monologue or story. Singers should prepare a short, unaccompanied song. Performers and staff who have worked with the theater within the last two years need not audition, but should contact Susan Wilder at 364-2426, ext. 26, to discuss their interest in working the upcoming season.
Auditions are 6:30 to 10:30 p.m. June 5 and 6 at the theater at 914 Third Street in Douglas. Auditions are by appointment only. Call Wilder to schedule a time.
