Friends of the Flag need friends

Posted: Thursday, May 18, 2000

The new millennium signifies the 22nd consecutive year that the Friends of the Flags have been able to have the flags of the 50 states flying along Egan Drive downtown for the summer season. The flag project could not be accomplished without the generous support of many businesses and a lot of individuals. The committee was able to repair the damage done by the many wind storms that hit Juneau in the last year of the century.

Friends of the Flags have relied only on contributions from the private sector. This season is no exception. We are a nonprofit organization so contributions are tax exempt. Five dollars, $20, $100 or more is gratefully accepted, of course. We have donors who have been with us for many, many years, some from the very beginning. We want them to know that we recognize their names when their checks come in the mail and appreciate their loyal support.

While we receive the great support mentioned above, we do have a problem and it is a significant one. The lack of actual volunteers who we can call on twice a year to help in the physical installation and removal of the flags is that problem. Over the years, our troops have dwindled. Originally, we had around a dozen individuals we could count on to lend a hand. Too few people to handle the traffic cones is the main concern. This spring we had so little help, it became actually dangerous to those of us involved. It takes about three or four hours to put the flags up. It is always done early on Sunday morning when the traffic is low. So if you would like to help, give us a call. We'll take your name and phone number and call you at least a week in advance of the work.

For donations or to volunteer, the address is Friends of the Flags, P.O. Box 32201,Juneau, Alaska, 99803. Let's keep the flags flying over the capital city.
