Student Artist in the Spotlight: Jeremiah Stephens

Posted: Friday, May 18, 2007

Age: 9.

Grade: 3.

School: Mendenhall River Community School.

Art of choice: drawing.

Reason: "I like to draw. I draw animals, pets and things in nature like, trees. I like to make things out of paper. I cut paper and fold it into animals."

Experience: about three years.

Sound off on the important issues at

All in the family: "My dad sort of draws. He draws himself, me, all kinds of stuff."

Favorite artists: "I like rock 'n'-roll music and funny music. I read lots of books and look at the pictures and try to figure out how the illustrator made them."

Future in art: "Maybe some day I'll teach other kids how to draw. I might give some of my art to kids. I might be an artist when I grow up."

Activites: "I'm in Glacier Swim Club. I play soccer and ice skate."

His classroom teacher, Rosary Lombardo, says: "Jeremiah truly loves to draw. It's what he chooses to do whenever he has free time in the classroom and at home. He always has a work in progress. Jeremiah's classmates recognize his special talent and often congregate around him to watch him at work. As he draws, they 'ooooh' and 'aaaaah' and make positive comments that spur him on. Jeremiah has an eye for detail. His drawings are complex, intricate renditions of what is going on in his imagination. He takes our classroom art projects to a higher level with his attention to detail, his willingness to take his time and work hard at something, and his enjoyment of the process. Often when Jeremiah finishes a drawing he will give it to someone in our class rather than keeping it for himself. His classmates love owning one of Jeremiah's works of art. That's the ultimate compliment!"
