JUNEAU - Juneau-Douglas High School senior Alexander Barto has been awarded an appointment to the United States Naval Academy. Barto will travel to Annapolis, Maryland for his induction ceremony July 1, 2010. He plans on majoring in engineering.
Barto received congressional nominations to the Academy from Senator Lisa Murkowski, Senator Mark Begich and Representative Don Young. Upon graduation from the Naval Academy, he is required to fulfill a five-year commitment to the military as an officer in the U.S. Navy. Barto was also awarded a Naval Reserve Officers' Training Corps (ROTC) scholarship to attend the University of Washington.
Born and raised in Juneau, he was a member of Glacier Swim Club for 12 years, as well as a member of JDHS varsity swim team, JDHS wrestling team and the JDHS track team. He is a volunteer member of the Juneau Fire Department. Over the last several years he has worked at the Augustus Brown Swimming Pool and Wings Airways.
Barto is a graduate of Mendenhall River Community School and Floyd Dryden Middle School. He is the son of David and Nancy Barto of Juneau.
