KODIAK - Coast Guard crews from Kodiak flew to Shemya in the western Aleutians to medevac a crewman who fell ill on a bulk carrier.
The Coast Guard says the distance is the equivalent of Seattle to Oklahoma City.
The 35-year-old crewman with abdominal pains was lifted Saturday from the bulk carrier about 85 miles southwest of Shemya and delivered to a commercial medevac in Shemya. The bulk carrier, the Asia Graca, is on its way from South Korea to Seattle.
The Coast Guard says the long-range medevec required two crews for the Jayhawk helicopter and a Hercules military transport.
