State ferries have a proven record
Letter to the editor
This letter is in response to Paul M. Hoffman, who paints a picture that ferries may be dangerous. In a recent Workboats magazine, a federal Department of Transportation official said that the safest form of transportation in the U.S. is by ferry and that the numbers prove it. The road to Skagway will not be a safe and reliable form of transportation and for the cost we can improve the service by water up the Lynn Canal. Don't be blinded by a desire to drive out. The result won't be what you expected and the consequences to Southeast Alaska aren't worth the risks. The ferry system has an excellent track record and whether it be fast or slow ferries marine transportation has proven itself time and time again.
