Juneau softball team ends road trip with a rout

Posted: Wednesday, May 19, 2004

Madison Massey pitched a five-inning, four-hit shutout and Juneau-Douglas batters slapped five doubles as the Crimson Bears routed the host Ketchikan Kings 10-0 on Tuesday.

With the win, Juneau (14-4 overall) completed a perfect record on its five-game road trip to Ketchikan and Craig.

Massey kept Ketchikan's batters in check throughout Tuesday's game.

"She came in and was pretty focused," Juneau coach Dave Massey said. "She had her pitched working and was very effective. She kept Ketchikan off balance."

And when Kayhi players did connect with the ball, Juneau's defense limited the damage. Dave Massey said Jordan Johnston made a standout play at shortstop, making a backhand stop of a ball in the gap and throwing out the Ketchikan batter.

On offense, five different Juneau batters hit doubles - Johnston, who finished 2-for-4, Ashley Larson (2-for-3), Nicole Bavard (2-for-3), Alycia Cox and Ashley Troutt.

In the first inning, Larson and Cox each hit RBI doubles as the Crimson Bears jumped out to a 5-0 lead. Juneau added two more runs in the third inning as Bavard doubled and scored on a single by Hannah Barril, and Cox hit a sacrifice fly to score Barril.

The Crimson Bears scored one run in the fourth as Torie Powers scored on a single by Bavard, and Juneau added two more runs in the fifth.

Ketchikan managed just four singles. The Kings finished their season at 7-11 overall and Region V.

In junior varsity action Tuesday, Andrea Doerflinger pitched a perfect game over five innings as the Crimson Bears trounced Ketchikan 14-0.

Juneau's next games are at home against Sitka this weekend. Varsity games are at 7 p.m. Friday, 5 p.m. Saturday and 7 p.m. Saturday, all at Melvin Park.
