Juneau Tornados Wrestling Club member Gerry Carrillo claimed a pair of state titles at the Alaska State Freestyle and Greco-Roman Wrestling Championships held April 30 and May 1 at the Harry McDonald Sports Center in Eagle River.
The Greco-Roman tournament took place on April 30 and had 261 wrestlers. The freestyle tourney was May 1 and had 549 competitors.
Carrillo, a Juneau-Douglas High School sophomore who won a high school state championship at 103 pounds in February, competed at 122 pounds in the cadet division (born 1987-88) at this meet and won titles in both the freestyle and Greco-Roman styles. In both styles, teammate Dante "Jephty" Santos took second place to Carrillo in the 122-pound division.
Two Juneau Tornados coaches also won titles in the open division (born after 1983 and out of high school) of the Greco-Roman tournament.
Jerrod Harvey won the 211.5-pound title - with Juneau Tornados coach Darren May second - while Justin Rasmussen won at 264.5 pounds. In the freestyle tournament, Harvey took second place and May was fourth at 211.5 pounds, while Rasmussen was third at 264.5. Harvey also won the open division's Gregorian Award for most pins in the least amount of time (three in 7 minutes, 43 seconds).
In the junior division (born after 1983 and still in grades 9-12), Jake Ritter took second place at 215 pounds in the Greco-Roman tourney. Patrick Lumba took third place at 215 in the freestyle tourney, and was fourth in Greco-Roman. John Kuterbach took fifth place in the 189-pound junior division at the freestyle tournament.
In the cadet division, Samson Keeney took third place in the 189-pound weight class in the Greco-Roman tournament and was fourth in the freestyle tourney. Matt Barry took third place and Dylan Mores was fifth in the 152-pound weight class of the freestyle tourney.
In the schoolboy division (born 1989-90), Phil Moser took second place in the 165-pound weight class of both the Greco-Roman and freestyle tournaments. Kurt Barry took fifth place in the 125-pound weight class and Jianni Spicciani finished sixth in the 105-pound division of the freestyle tourney, with Spicciani adding a third-place finish in the Greco-Roman.
In the novice division (born 1991-92), Shane Douglas grabbed second place in the 75-pound weight class of both the Greco-Roman and freestyle tournaments. Colton Douglas took third place in Greco-Roman and sixth in freestyle in the 80-pound division, while Ben Hotch had a third in Greco-Roman and sixth in freestyle at 100 pounds.
In the midget division (born 1993-94), Corianne Douglas took third place in the Greco-Roman and fourth place in the freestyle in the 60-pound weight class.
In the bantam division (born 1995-96), Dugan Paddock took second place in the 75++-pound weight class in the freestyle tournament (there also were 75-pound and 75+++-pound weight divisions).
Listed on the team's traveling roster, but with no results were bantam wrestlers Tyler Cole and Riley Moser; novice wrestler Kyle Barry and junior wrestler Chris Pleasants.
