JUNEAU - The Tlingit-Haida Central Council hired energy expert Percy Frisby to head its new Tribal Energy Department.
The department was created during the council's annual general assembly in Juneau last month.
During the meeting, members identified energy costs as a leading problem for Native communities in Southeast Alaska.
The tribe said the cost of energy and lack of affordable fuel alternatives is impacting the health of its citizens, as well as the cost of living, transportation, availability of food and the ability to gather food, and heating homes, businesses and public buildings.
The tribe mandated that the new department find energy solutions for the region.
Frisby, an enrolled tribal citizen, has 30 years of experience in the energy field in Alaska. He has worked for the state, Alaska Native corporations, tribal councils and local governments.
