High schoolers discourage DUIs

Posted: Thursday, May 20, 2010

JUNEAU - Juneau school district juniors and seniors from all three high schools will be participating in an event aimed at discouraging drinking and driving today.

The event, called "Every 15 minutes," will involve a mock car crash and funeral in the JDHS parking lot this afternoon. Starting this morning, "grim reapers" will pull students from class every 15 minutes.

The event was started by the Chico Police Department in the 1990s, when a person was killed in an alcohol-related crash every 15 minutes.

That statistic is now every 30 minutes.

The program is hosted in conjunction with the Juneau Police Department, Capital City Fire Rescue, other government agencies and multiple private business supporters. Emergency vehicles will be parked at the school during the event.
