A graduate shakes hands with Judge Keith B. Levy upon being selected for an outstanding graduate award at the 3rd Annual Ceremonial Commencement exercises for the Juneau Therapeutic Court on Thursday at the Dimond Courthouse. Therapeutic Court is an 18-month program for misdemeanor or felony defendants who are charged with a DUI or refusal, or who have a history of alcohol-related offenses and want to overcome their addiction to alcohol. If the seven graduates honored on Thursday would have opted for jail time, they would have served a combined sentence of 10 years and cost taxpayers nearly $500,000. Participants report improved health and family lives, an increase in employment opportunities and greater involvement in the community. Twenty-four individuals have completed the program, and nine offenders are currently still enrolled. The seven graduates on Thursday were Cheryl L., Richard W., Philip S., Tracy L., Elias B., William K., and Dallas B.
