Francis `Frank' Harrell

Former Juneau resident Francis ``Frank'' Harrell died May 19, 2000, in his home in Plant City, Fla.

He was born Dec. 25, 1931, in Detroit, Mich.

The retired U.S. Coast Guard Commander served in Juneau from 1975 until 1981. After his retirement from the Coast Guard, Harrell worked as a letter carrier for the Postal Service.

He was a member of the Retired Officers Association and the past secretary of the National Association of Letter Carriers.

He was survived by his wife Mary Lee Harrell and daughter Helen Harrell Howard of Plant City, Fla.; son John Olin Harrell of Texas; brother Alan R. Harrell; sisters Mary Jeanne Gilbert and Ruth Miller all of Lakeland, Fla.; Patty Harrington of North Carolina; and grandchildren Christy and Charlie Howard of Juneau.

A memorial service will be held Tuesday, May 23, 2000, at St. Clement Catholic Church in Florida.

Mary Joanne Johnson

Hoonah resident Mary Joanne Johnson died May 19, 2000, in Juneau.

She was born Nov. 30, 1912, in Hoonah.

She worked in the Hoonah Cannery along with other canneries and owned Mary's Ice Cream Parlor in Hoonah.

She was a member of the Lady's Lions Club and a lifetime member of ANS Camp 12. She and her husband donated the land for the William and Mary Johnson Youth Center in Hoonah. She loved children and enjoyed spending time with her extended family.

She was preceded in death by her husband William S. Johnson.

She is survived by her sisters Eva Davis and Jennie Lindoff and brother Wilbur (Jumbo) James, all of Hoonah; nieces and nephews Mary Joanne Felipe, Wilbur Knudson, Ken Willard Jr., Wilbur (Jumbo) James. Jr. and Mary Kathass of Juneau; Celeste Willard and Doreen Westom of Seattle; Lillian James, Thomas James, Cathy Lindoff and Steven Lindoff of Hoonah; Thomas Bell, John Bell and David Bell of Anchorage; and many grandnieces and nephews and great-grandnieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held today at Alaska Memorial Park.

Esther J. Nickel

Esther J. Nickel

Former Juneau resident Esther J. Nickel died May 17, 2000, in Bethel Health Care Centre, in Kansas.

She was born June 9, 1937, in Enid, Okla.

She and her husband, Samuel Nickel, moved to Juneau in 1963. She was a homemaker and a member of the Auke Bay Bible Church. After her husband's death in 1988, she moved to Newton, Kan. Nickel enjoyed music and taught Sunday school for many years.

She is survived by sons Galen and Jerrel Nickel of Snohomish, Wash.; daughter Shelly Roth of Lodi, Wis.; brothers Adolph Koehn of Newton, Kan.; Martin Koehn of Rio Linda, Calif.; and Abner Koehn of Jackson, Tenn.; and sister Dahna Regier of Elbing, Kan.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m., on May 24, 2000, at the Newton Bible Church in Newton, Kan.
