Ten Bears earn state at-large bids

Posted: Tuesday, May 22, 2001

Ten Juneau-Douglas High School track and field athletes received at-large bids for this weekend's State Track and Field Championships at Palmer High School.

These athletes will join the six Crimson Bears who already qualified for state by winning their events Friday and Saturday at the Region V Track and Field Championships in Juneau.

The winner of each individual event at last weekend's five region track meets from around the state automatically receive a trip to the state meet. Eleven at-large bids are selected from a pool of the next best times or distances from the regions for a total of 16 athletes in each event.

This is done to make two uniform preliminary races in each running event with eight runners to fill up every lane of the Palmer track. The boys and girls' high jumps have more than 16 qualifiers each due to ties.

"We're really happy with the at-large bids," Juneau head track coach Tracy Rivera said. "We're totally psyched. We didn't expect that many."

Seniors Clay Brown and Aaron Larson each qualified for the triple jump and high jump. Brown went 41 feet, 1/2 inch in the triple jump while Larson went 38-10. Brown cleared 5-8 in the high jump and Larson went 5-6.

Sophomore Cody Bloom qualified in the triple jump and the long jump. He jumped 39-6 1/2 in the triple jump and was one of five Region V qualifiers in the long jump with a distance of 19-8 3/4.

Juniors T.J. Mason and Stephen Perry will represent Juneau in the 200-meter dash. Perry was clocked at 24.27 and Mason at 24.29 to take second and third places at the Region V meet.

Co-captian Alan Floresca qualified in the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 16.84.

The Juneau girls added three 800-meter runners to its already large state contingency. Senior Brandy Weston (2:31.66), Junior Hilary Young (2:31.19) and Sophomore Molly Krehlik (2:29.59), who already qualified in the 1,600 meters and 3,200 meters, made the state cut.

Junior Claire Martin qualified in the 400 meters with at time of 1:04.41.

The at-large bids along with Friday and Saturday's qualifiers gives the Crimson Bears 15 athletes who qualified for 24 individual events at the state meet, in addition to their six relay teams.

Several Southeast athletes outside Juneau also qualified for state including the Region V's top male performer, Geoff Nordlund, who received an at-large bid in the 100 meters. Nordlund won the 110-meter hurdles, long jump and triple jump at the Region V meet to qualify for state in four individual events.

The region's top female performer, Amber Beardslee, will also compete in four individual events by making the cut in the triple jump and discus. Beardslee won the high jump and long jump last weekend.

"The Southeast will be represented real well," Rivera said. "it will be nice to show those Anchorage people that we have some good programs here."
