Thank a veteran on Memorial Day

As a young girl living in Germany under the domination of Hitler during World War II, I have seen firsthand the graciousness of the young American soldiers.

Germany, as a whole, was so happy when the U.S. Army came to liberate us. The United States brought with it hope when there was despair, and helped us rebuild our communities and lives.

I have never heard of the United States going into a country to conquer and oppress the people, just to help liberate them from oppression. It is important that our military presence remain in the country we help to liberate to prevent a dictator from taking over again, such as happened after World War I in Germany. The U.S. left, allowing Hitler to take over.

We need to quit fighting amongst ourselves over what is happening in Iraq. This shows that as a whole this country is not united. What is the saying, "United we stand, divided we fall"? A divided country is what these countries would like to see.

Yes, young men are dying but without these unselfish acts, this country as well as may others would not have the opportunities that we take for granted. Building a democratic society doesn't just happen overnight, especially in a country that has been ruled by dictators for hundreds of years.

Please take time to thank those who have fought past wars and those who are currently fighting to maintain freedom, not just on Memorial Day, but every day. Without the selflessness of our military, we would not be able to enjoy the freedoms we hold so dear.

I am proud of my husband and both of my sons for being in the military and helping to maintain our freedom. Keeping the U.S. and other countries free costs. Freedom isn't free!
