Fairbanks man convicted of sexual assault

FAIRBANKS - A 38-year-old Fairbanks man pleaded no contest Wednesday to sexually assaulting his 17-year-old live-in baby sitter.

Prosecutors offered William Jones a chance to plea to a reduced charge after a trial ended with a hung jury last month. Under the deal, he faces up to five years in prison.

Jones had been charged with twice sexually assaulting the teen-ager at knifepoint, first on Halloween night and again the following night.

Much of the trial focused on conversations the victim had with Jones after the incident. He at times vehemently denied the incident and at other times posed theoretical questions and made statements prosecutors said implied his guilt.

Jurors could not reach a decision after four days.

On Tuesday afternoon, Jones appeared before Superior Court Judge Jane Kauvar, and, after several minutes of delaying a decision, tearfully agreed to the plea deal.
