Juneau will host a national conference on preventing substance abuse by youth.
The conference will be held June 5 to 7 at Dzantik'i Heeni Middle School. It is intended for professionals in the field, community volunteers and parents. The conference is free, but because space is limited those interested should register by calling 364-3801 or through the Web site www.asdn.org.
The conference will have a program for youths and families from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday.
The conference will be presented by the U.S. Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration and the U.S. Department of Juvenile Justice. It is hosted by Juneau Youth Services, the Juneau School District, the Tlingit-Haida Central Council, and the Alaska Staff Development Network.
The keynote speakers will be Ken Winters, an expert on youth substance abuse, and Don Coyhis, a Native developer of community prevention networks.
