Separate comments from Web articles

Posted: Friday, May 23, 2008

I'm all for the new commenting forum recently instituted by the Juneau Empire; my only complaint is with its format. As is, the comments start immediately after each news article, almost like an extension of the article itself.

Having the comments appear on the same screen as the articles is problematic in two ways.

First of all, depending on the number of comments, it takes longer for the page to load. As someone who has given up high-speed Internet to help pay my electric bill, this is a bigger concern than it used to be.

Secondly, it can be disconcerting to see factual articles melt rather seamlessly into often divisive, unsubstantiated public commentary. I realize there is a disclaimer posted but it is easy to gloss over when scanning an article.

Again, I am not against the commenting, just please consider redirecting readers to a separate page from the article to continue the debate.
