Three members of the Juneau Aurora Knights synchronized swimming team qualified for national competition in a regional contest held May 12-13 in Spokane, Wash., against competitors from Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Montana and British Columbia.
Qualifying for nationals were Sarah Felix, Johanna Evans and Rose Evans that will be held in Syarcuse, NY, on June 23-30. Felix qualified with a third-place finish in the solo routine and Johanna and Rose Evans qualified in the duet routine with a third place finish.
Scoring consisted of 35 percent from four mandatory figures and 65 percent for the technical and artistic judging of the swimmer's routine.
"It is very exciting to see that the Juneau Aurora Knights can compete with the huge programs of Seattle and Portland," coach and competitor Johanna Evans said. "Our scores were right there with them. Now we can look to the future knowing that we are very competitive."
At this time, the swimmers are unsure whether they will be traveling to New York to compete at nationals.
"It is such a huge expense and we do not know if that would be prudent," Johanna Evans said. "Perhaps we should set our sights on Nationals next year which are in Federal Way, Washington and plan on taking more members of the team."
The Juneau community will be able to see the team in action on June 9 at the Augustus Brown Swimming Pool when they will be hosting a competition with teams from Bozeman, Mont., and Whitehorse.
