Former Juneau resident Hans Wika, 86, died May 17, 2005, in Eugene, Ore.
He was born to Georg and Agnes Eriksen Vika on Jan. 28, 1919, in Trondheim, Norway. The family name was changed to Wika when they immigrated to the United States.
At 10 years old, after recovering from polio, he sailed alone from Norway to New York to join his parents who had arrived two years earlier. He moved to Alaska and lived there for many years. He worked as an electronic engineer for the Alaska Department of Fish and Game. He later lived in Seattle and moved in 1975 to Eugene.
He enjoyed traveling and helping children with autism. Friends said he "will be remembered for his love of children, and his wit, optimism and generosity."
A memorial service will be 4 p.m., May 24, at Mount Calvary Cemetery Chapel in Eugene. Memorial contributions may be made in his name to Children's Willow Learning Center, 87898 La Porte Drive, Eugene, Ore., 97402. For more information, call 780-4085.
