SITKA - The SouthEast Alaska Regional Health Consortium and the Sitka Local Foods Network will host Northwest garden guru and radio/TV personality Ciscoe Morris for his presentation on "Working With Nature For An Oh-la-la Garden."
The presentation takes place from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Monday at the Mount Edgecumbe High School campus, 1330 Seward Drive. Tickets cost $5 and only 90 tickets are available at Old Harbor Books. The presentation is a fundraiser for the Sitka Local Foods Network. The cost of bringing Morris to Sitka was sponsored by Spenard Builders Supply, White's Inc., True Value, The Chocolate Moose and Old Harbor Books. SLFN board members Linda Wilson provided air miles and Sharon Romine provided accomodations at her bed and breakfast.
Morris is host of the Seattle-based weekly radio and TV show, "Gardening With Ciscoe," which airs on KIRO-FM, KING5-TV (GCI Cable Channel 2 in Sitka) and Northwest Cable News. Morris also travels around the world to give gardening presentations. He is the author of the national best-selling gardening book, "Ask Ciscoe" and he writes a Thursday garden column for the Seattle Times. His Web site is http://www.ciscoe.com/.
The Sitka Local Foods Network emerged out of two community wellness projects from the 2008 Sitka Health Summit - to start a public market for local fish and produce (the Sitka Farmers Market) and to expand community gardens/build a community greenhouse. The Sitka Local Foods Network also has taken on additional food security projects, such as providing education about gardening and promoting the use of local subsistence foods.
