FAIRBANKS - A Fairbanks postal worker has been indicted on accusations she stole Wal-Mart gift cards from her mail route.

Brenda Janak of North Pole has been charged with theft and fraudulent use of an access device. She is scheduled to be arraigned June 8.

The 50-year-old Janak allegedly took and later redeemed four $25 gift cards that were packed into a single envelope. The cards were from a Washington woman sending a Christmas present to her great-grandchildren in Fairbanks.

The case was investigated by the Anchorage-based Office of the Inspector General for the U.S. Postal Service.

The Fairbanks Daily News-Miner reports Janak has no prior criminal history in Alaska. She is reportedly no longer employed by the postal service.
