JUNEAU - Both of an Alaska Marine Highway ferry's main engines shut down on several occasions Sunday evening while en route to Juneau from Petersburg,
The ferry Malaspina was heading northbound in Scow Bay just outside Petersburg when the failure happened, said Roger Wetherell, spokesman for the state Department of Transportation.
The Malaspina remained overnight in Petersburg for repairs, and the ferry Taku was rescheduled to pick up Malaspina's passengers.
The Malaspina's Monday sailing to Sitka was canceled, Wetherell said.
Passengers scheduled to travel on the canceled runs were contacted by AMHS reservation staff, he said.
Wetherell said ferry system engineers believe the engine shutdowns were caused by a faulty power supply. The problem they experienced was a loss of charging power to the 24-volt system for the main engines.
