Awards, honors, graduations and enlistments

Marianne Mills of Juneau was elected first vice-president of the League of Women Voters during its state convention in Anchorage recently. Marie Olson of Juneau was elected as a director of the group.

Patrick Shallcross of Haines has graduated from the University of North Alabama in Florench, Ala., with a master of arts in education.

Army Pvt. Jason S. Miller has arrived at Fort Benning in Columbus, Ga., to complete basic military training.

Five Juneau students have graduated from Oregon State University in Corvallis, Ore. They are Daniel Anthony Fisher, who received a bachelor of science degree in forest recreation resources; Jennifer Michelle Johnson, who received a bachelor of science in exercise and sport science; Alicia Kelly Nelson, who received a bachelor of arts in political science and a bachelor of arts in international studies; Kerry Ann Fujioka, who received a bachelor of science in mechanical engineering; and Shireen A. Soltani, who received a bachelor of science in philosophy.

Willie Tonsgard, 13, recently won the grand prize in a safety poster contest hosted by the Alaska Timber Insurance Exchange in Ketchikan. His sister, Billie-June Tonsgard, 11, won first place in her age group.

Charlene Elizabeth Dyson has graduated from Boise State University in Boise, Idaho, with a bachelor of music in music education.

Jim Leet was one of six people honored for working with youths in the area of natural resources at the 65th annual North American Wildlife and Natural Resources Conference held recently in Chicago. He has been a leader of 4-H in Juneau for 12 years.

Jonathan Shane Rear of Juneau has graduated from Eastern New Mexico University in Portales, N.M., with a bachelor of science degree in industrial technology.

Zebediah Genner Schorr, a 1996 graduate of JDHS, is receiving his A.B. degree in music from Vasser College. He is scheduled to attend the University of Pennsylvania School of Law this fall.

Paul Pukis of Juneau recent joined the Navy for guaranteed training in the Intelligence Officer Program. He will attend Officer Candidate School in Pensacola, Fla.

Vanessa Durgan of Juneau has been awarded a Child Development Associate Credential in recognition of outstanding work with young children. The credential was awarded by the Council for Professional Recognition in Washington, D.C.

Lisa Laurin has received an associate of applied science degree as a registered dental hygienist and licensed anesthesiologist from the University of Alaska Anchorage.
