With the cost of living in Juneau extremely high, one can pinpoint the reason Wal-Mart might seem like a great addition to the consumer market here. But the real impact of the store is far reaching. The city talks rhetoric about the reduced tax burden on the community, but they fail to realize that with Wal-Mart, wages will decrease throughout the city and people won't even be able to pay a reduced tax. It pains me to see the city officials speak of the benefits of such an addition when they know full well the overall impact that it will have on local business and wages. Wal-Mart destroys communities by reducing wage bases and throwing people into a continuum of poverty.
I ask those of you in favor of Wal-Mart why they shun unionization, and even slap unions in the face by closing unionized stores? The reason is that they know keeping wages and benefits down increases profit and allows them to saturate a market. Smaller businesses that provide benefits have a greater overhead and can not compete with Wal-Mart's Chinese made products and cheap labor.
For those of you welcoming a Wal-Mart into our community, you've lost your way and need guidance. As a whole, we as a community need to stand up and take the high road and put a stop to Wal-Mart coming to our area. We owe it to our business community, ourselves, and our city.
