Longtime Juneau resident Verna Marie Hansen, 96, died May 19, 2005, at Wildflower Court in Juneau.
She was born to Mary Ida and Emil Olsen on July 29, 1908, in Minneapolis. She married Leonard Hansen in 1932 and worked as a licensed beautician until they moved in 1945 to Sitka. She then made Alaska her home.
She enjoyed the pioneering spirit of Alaska: berry picking, gardening, crafts and fishing. Her family said that she "was definitely the matriarch of the family and everyone answered to her."
She was preceded in death by her husband, Leonard Hansen; her sister, Bernice Flemming; and her brother, Vincent (Ole) Olsen.
She is survived by her daughter, Shirley (David) Jilbert of Juneau; her sister, Lorraine Hyer of Minneapolis; her grandchildren, Jody and Lynn Daniels, Julie Lawrence, Jill Lawrence, Cheryl (Andy) Adler, Keith (Shannon) Jilbert; her great-grandchildren, Teak Daniels, Brandy Greenaugh and Terra Alvey; and her nieces, Cheryl Gilbertson, Colleen Anderson, Mark and Greg Hyer.
At her request, a private family service will be held later this summer at the Shrine of St. Therese. Memorial contributions in her name may be made to Wildflower Court.
