Former Douglas resident Elmer R. Savikko, of Central Point, Ore., died April 29, 2009. He was 84.
He was born June 3, 1924 in Douglas, to Herman and Elli (Tiitto) Savikko. He served in the Army Air Corps as a staff sergeant from 1943 to 1945. On Sept. 29, 1957, he married the former June E. Bluechel, who preceded him in death Feb. 7, 2008.
He received his Master's of Science in civil engineering from the University of Washington in 1952. He operated Savikko Engineering in Ashland, Ore., for many years and was involved in the engineering of the Providence Hospital expansions.
He was preceded in death by his mother and father, Elli and Herman Savikko; sisters, Hilda Savikko, Jennie Sandbank and Alma Gebbart; brothers, Walter, Herbert, Hjalmar, Robert, Albert and Bruno Savikko; nephew, Walter Savikko Jr.; and numerous others.
He is survived by his brother, Ben Savikko, of Douglas; sisters-in-law, Nell Savikko, Lorein Savikko, Geraldine (Savikko) Straty and Martha Savikko; nieces, Joerene, Evalyn, Allison, Kathleen, Ellen, Elaine, Linda, Lana, Coreen and Michele Bilyeu; and nephews, Doug, Herman, Kurt, Rick, Albert and Bern Savikko, and Bill Sandbank.
A memorial graveside service was held May 8 at Eagle Point National Cemetery. Rev. Paul Hagedorn, Providence Hospice chaplain, officiated.
Arrangements were by Litwiller-Simonsen Funeral Home in Ashland, Ore.
