Juneau man places at Moustache Championships

Posted: Wednesday, May 27, 2009

Juneau's Aaron Suring, 30, took second place in the Alaskan Whaler category at the World Beard and Moustache Championships held May 23 in Anchorage.

Suring, who was there primarily to work on a short documentary with compatriots from the local multimedia design house Alaska Robotics, decided to enter for fun. He didn't know he had a beard of the Alaskan Whaler variety before showing up and had to shave off his mustache to enter the contest, said Sarah Asper-Smith of the documentary crew.

Asper-Smith is encouraging people to congratulate Suring at a celebration picnic on Sandy Beach from 2 to 4 p.m. Saturday, that will include the beard, beard-shaped sand castles and refreshments.
