Juneau synchronized swimmers Koko Urata and Sarah Felix qualified for the 2003 Esynchro Age Group National Championships with their performance at a regional competition earlier this month in Portland, Ore.
Urata and Felix, who compete with the Juneau Aurora Knights club, each qualified in their solo routines and also earned berths at nationals with their duet performance.
The age group national competition will be held in Gainesville, Fla., from June 30 to July 4. Urata and Felix also will be competing in the 2003 United Airlines Open on July 15-19 in Federal Way, Wash., near Seattle - their first international meet. The two swimmers qualified for that meet with their scores at the West Zone championships in San Diego last February.
Urata and Felix will offer Juneau residents a chance to see them perform this weekend. The duo, along with the rest of the Aurora Knights, will offer a free synchronized swimming exhibition at 11 a.m. on Sunday, June 1, at the Augustus G. Brown Pool.
At the Portland regional meet, held May 16-17, Urata finished third (66.832 points) and Felix fifth (66.426) for their figures - a set of required elements - in the age 14-15 division. The first-place finisher, from Oregon, scored 69.168.
In their duet, Urata and Felix finished second with 77.833 points. The top finisher, from Oregon, scored 80.667.
In solo competition, Urata finished second (78.5) and Felix third (77.667). The first-place finisher - again, from Oregon - scored 80.333.
While they are both still 13 years old, Urata and Felix must compete with older swimmers in the age 14-15 category because they turn 14 later this year - Felix in November and Urata in December.
