FAIRBANKS - The Johnny Oldman School in Hughes has its first high school graduate.

The entire population of the Athabascan village on the Koyukuk turned out to honor Jimmie Ambrose at the May 20 graduation ceremony. The village has about 65 residents.

Ambrose shared the spotlight with Ethan Nicholia, 6, the school's lone kindergarten graduate. There were a total of 16 students enrolled at graduation time.

"It was fun. It gave me something to do," said Ambrose, 19, describing his senior year after taking a year off.

"Everybody from the village is very proud of Jimmie," said Oldman School Principal Michelle Amundson. "They're proud not only because he's the first graduate here, but because Jimmie had quit school for about a year and he decided to come back and get his diploma."

Hughes is about 210 air miles northwest of Fairbanks.
