Posted: Friday, May 28, 2004

Juneau Aurora Knights synchronized swim club member Sarah Felix drew the 13th starting position, but it wasn't an unlucky number.

Felix posted the top score in the individual figures competition for the age 14-15 division at the 2004 Western Zone Region A Age Group Championships held Saturday and Sunday at Juanita Pool in Kirkland, Wash.

The Dzantik'i Heeni Middle School eighth-grader's score of 70.618 points was the top in her age group and third-highest overall. Finishing in second place in the age 14-15 division was Juneau teammate and fellow Dzantik'i Heeni eighth-grader Koko Urata, who posted a score of 70.588 for fourth overall.

The only two swimmers to post higher scores - Helen Mottershead (71.043) and Derya Arac (70.876), both of the MAC Synchro team out of Portland, Ore. - competed in the age 16-17 division.

Also competing for the Juneau Aurora Knights was Kaitlyn Bausler, whose score of 59.451 took fifth place in the age 18-19 division in the individual figures competition.

Felix and Urata also finished 1-2 both in their age group and overall in the right splits competition, where swimmers do inverted splits with their heads in the water and feet in the air.

Felix posted the top score with 96.670 points and Urata took second place with 91.670 to win the age 14-15 division and overall competition. Bausler's score of 61.000 was good for fourth place in the age 18-19 division.

In the solo competition, Urata won the age 14-15 division title with a score of 75.744 points - the top score overall. Felix took second place in the age 14-15 division and overall with a score of 75.209. Marissa Leahy of the Valdez Synchro Seals took seventh place in the age 14-15 division with 64.867 points.

Bausler finished third in the age 18-19 division solo competition with 63.376 points. Chris Leahy of the Valdez Synchro Seals won the division with 73.119 points.

Urata and Felix teamed up to win the age 14-15 duet competition with a score of 76.002 points. Taking fifth place in the age 14-15 division duet with 66.311 points were Margaret Embick and Kerstin Cullen of the Valdez Synchro Seals, the only other Alaska team at the meet.

Urata and Felix will represent the Juneau Aurora Knights at the age group nationals June 29-30 in Indianapolis.
