Book will be in observance of Alaska's golden anniversary

In observance of the golden anniversary of Alaska statehood and Juneau as Alaska's capital city, the Juneau Empire is publishing a pictorial history book featuring historic photos submitted by the newspaper's readers.

The 128-page book will be a library-quality, hardbound collectors edition, and all photos featured will be those submitted by Empire readers between June 1 and Aug. 1. The book will contain approximately 400 photos, said Empire publisher Robert Hale.

"Since late last year we've thought about the right kind of pictorial history book to publish during the 50th year of statehood," he said, "and to create a book built around historic photos submitted by our readers seems like the prefect way to chronicle the rich and storied past of Juneau.

"There are many, many wonderful photos of early-day Juneau that have never been published or, for that matter, seen by so many who live in Juneau today. We want to share that treasure trove during this historic year for Alaska and for Juneau, and in doing so publish a book that was created by our readers."

Copies of the pictorial book will sell for a list price of $49.95, plus local sales tax and $5 for shipping and handling. Books may be ordered in advance for $39.95, plus local sales tax, shipping and handling.

The Empire will also offer the book in a deluxe leather-bound edition, no more than 100 of which will ever be produced, for $75 plus local sales tax and $5 for shipping and handling.

"What we hope to accomplish in this historic year in the state's history is to present a library-quality book with as many photos from our readers' family collections as we can," Hale said. "As we seek photo submissions from our readers, we're going to see just how much local history is in private hands and that has never been presented in this form."

Hale added that all photos submitted for publication will be handled with the utmost care, and that all pictures will be returned in the exact condition in which they were submitted.

Readers who submit photos for the history book need not purchase a book in order to have their submissions considered for publication. Sample copies of similar publications are available at our office for inspection.

The deadline for photo submissions is Aug. 1. Books will be printed and ready for release by Thanksgiving 2009.
