Title and firm:Co-owner of Gastineau Gamut, a company that owns and operates Hummingbird Services.
Services: Carpet and upholstery cleaning, ultrasonic blind cleaning, leather furniture cleaning, Oriental rug cleaning, janitorial services and fire, smoke and flood restoration.
Biographical information: Originally from England, Spalding moved to the United States in 1978 and worked as a computer consultant in New York City. A year later, he was sent to Juneau for three weeks to work with the state of Alaska. Despite having plans to return to England after his work in Juneau, Spalding never left the capital city. For the better part of the next two decades, he worked as a computer programmer and analyst in several government agencies within the state and became a U.S. citizen in 1986. After his home suffered substantial damage from a fire in 1994, he hired Rod Morgan - general manager and owner of Hummingbird Services - to perform the clean-up. Due to Morgan's expertise, most of the contents of his home were salvaged, said Spalding. In 1995, Morgan closed down Hummingbird services but reopened the company with Spalding, as a partner, in 1997. Morgan is responsible for the operational aspect of the business and Spalding, who no longer works for the state, oversees the administration and financial functions.
Family: Spalding is single.
Notable: The company is committed to training staff on an ongoing basis, which is important since one-third of the business is devoted to water, smoke and fire restoration, said Spalding. Another large portion of the business is devoted to janitorial work and carpet cleaning.
Quotable:``It's a fascinating business, you never know what's going to happen. Putting someone's house back together after a fire or flood is such a great feeling. We really enjoy helping people. I'm having more fun than I should be allowed,'' said Spalding.
