Local firefighters will participate in an annual fundraiser called "Fill the Boot" to benefit the Alaska Chapter of the Muscular Dystrophy Association on Friday, June 4, from 4 to 7 p.m. and on Saturday, June 5, from 12 to 3 p.m. Motorists may drop their dollars and change in the firefighters' boots at Costco, Super Bear and the Mt. Roberts Tramway parking lots.
Last year during the "Fill the Boot" program, firefighters raised over $5,700 for area children and adults living with any one of over 40 muscle-wasting diseases.
The dollars raised during the "Fill the Boot" campaign go to provide services to families in the Southeast and throughout Alaska. Services include summer camp for children ages 6 to 17, MDA clinic and support group, assistance with the repair of medical equipment, and ultimately finding treatments and cures for the diseases covered by the Muscular Dystrophy Association.
All services are provided by MDA without cost to the families. MDA's programs are funded entirely by individual, private contributors and businesses.
The Muscular Dystrophy Association receives no funding from United Way or government grants.
