Volunteer Achievement award winners

Susan Knowles recently hosted the ninth Volunteer Achievement Awards Ceremony. The ceremony, sponsored by the Juneau Women's Council in celebration of Women's History Month, allows agencies and organizations a forum in which they can honor their female volunteers.

Knowles began the event with a welcoming speech to the volunteers and members of their agencies, families and friends. Juneau Mayor Dennis Egan spoke and Lt. Governor Fran Ulmer made a closing speech. Each agency provided their awards and acknowledgements, which Ulmer presented to the volunteers.

One hundred and thirty guests were present to applaud the honorees. Their names and charitable organizations are as follows:

AARP/Mount Juneau Chapter 865, Valerie Washalefsky; Alaska State Museum, Diane Oliphant; Alaska Women's Network, Penelope Goforth; AWARE, Stacie Kraly; Bartlett House Foundation, Kathy Barrett; Big Brothers/Big Sisters of Juneau, Karen Pabor; Concerns of Police Survivors, Sue Reishus-O'Brien; Eagle River Methodist Camp, Bea Shepard; Floyd Dryden Middle School, Linda Manners; Friends of the Alaska State Museum, Marjorie Menzie; Friends of the Alaska State Museum, Christine Crooks; Gastineau Channel Historical Society, Willette Janes; Gastineau Humane Society, Cindy Fields; Hospice and Home Care, Jamie McLean; Juneau Public Health Center, Nicole Moore; Juneau Women's Council, Lauren Smoker; League of Women's Voters, Ann Metcalfe; Litter Free Inc., Kathleen Gamble and Peggy Cartmill; National Association of Federal Retired Employees, Jessie Herrold; Parents, Family and Friends of Lesbians and Gays, Dixie Hood; Pioneers of Alaska Auxiliary #6 Juneau, Maxine Race; Soroptimists International of Juneau, Ann Park; Tongass Alaska Girl Scout Council, Maggie Stumme; Women's Leadership Institute, Jeri Museth.

Capital City Fire and Rescue honored 18 firefighters. In the Auke Bay district, they were: Yvette Curry, Ami Reifenstein, Traci Salter, Theresa Smith, Linda Zinnikas. For Douglas, Michelle Dilbeck, Kelly Egan, Denise Henley, Lesley Lynch and Jennifer Wannamaker were honored. In the Glacier district the honorees were: Cheryl Buchhorn, Debbie Cox, Michelle Ramsey, Tina Rodriguez, Beth Weldon and Suzanne Wiff. Debbi Rathbone and Shelley Owens were chosen from the Lynn Canal district, and Angela Johnston was honored for the Juneau district.
