Heidi Reifenstein and Miah Lager draw their inspiration from the world around them.
"We're kind of looking at society and trying to look at it different ways," Reifenstein said. "[We're] observing other influences."
The two young artists, who will be featured in the Juneau Arts and Humanities Council gallery during the month of June, work in a variety of mediums. The pieces Reifenstein will display include large oils, charcoal drawings and prints.
"I love working on masonite because it's a great way to use stain," she said.
Lager's work ranges from oils and pastels to sculpture.
"I'm more into representational, but I'm not necessarily into realism," she said. "I like to enhance the color."
Despite the varied materials, their pieces have a similar theme.
"We try to make people look at their lives with more introspection," Lager said. "I was trying to find for myself ... pieces that talked to each other, related to each other so it felt like a show."
Both women grew up in Juneau and have exhibited work on smaller scales in the past. Reifenstein has a bachelor's degree in studio art from Whitman College, while Lager is a sophomore at the Maryland Institute College of Art.
"We've been best friends for a long time," Reifenstein said. "I just kind of started doing [art] stuff in high school, and when I started taking classes, Miah was always there."
"I've always been doing art," Lager said. "When I was little, I had stuff exhibited. I've always wanted to be a starving artist."
Their work is continually evolving, according to Reifenstein.
"My older pieces are much more realistic, much tighter. I've slowly gone more abstract," she said. "I've become much more aware of my mark making ... Sometimes I'll just start putting marks on something and see what comes out of it, and then I'll kind of edit it and make it into something more familiar."
The exhibit opens this Friday with a reception from 4:30 to 6:30 at the Gallery of the Arts Council, 206 North Franklin Street. It will run until June 30; during that time, the gallery is open from noon to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, or by appointment. Call 586-2787 for more information.
