Juneau is hot spot for summer science camps

For those adults or their children who want something to keep them busy this summer, here are a few camps to consider.

Juneau Economic Development Council science camps

Start date: June 8.

Age groups: elementary to high school.

This summer, in partnership with over six other organizations, the Juneau Economic Development Council is offering a variety of summer camps based in Juneau. All of these programs are made possible by funding from the U.S. Dept. of Defense, where top leadership recognizes the importance of investing in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math for K-16 students and inspiring the next generation of scientists, engineers and problem-solvers.

High school camps:

3D Animation - DigipenProjectFUN Workshop

Who: students entering grades eight to 12.

When: 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, June 8-19.

Where: Thunder Mountain High School.

Video Game Programming - Digipen ProjectFUN Workshop

Who: students entering grades eight to 12 (older students given preference).

When: 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, June 8-19.

Where: Juneau-Douglas High School.

Middle school camps:

H2O Power Camp

What: Explore tidal, wave and hydro power and the amazing properties of water. Includes whitewater rafting and a visit to Snettisham Hydroelectric Project.

Who: students currently in grades six to eight.

When: Six-day camp, from June 15 to 20.

Where: Thunder Mountain High School.

Sun to Sea NOAA Science Camp

What: Atmospheric and marine science including student-built ROVs, Plankton tows on NOAA vessels, PSP testing, underwater sound, etc.

Who: students currently in grades six to eight.

When: Two-week day camp: 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. July 13 to 24.

Where: NOAA Auke Bay Lab.

Middle and elementary school:

FIRST LEGO League - NXT Programming Camp

What: Beginner Programming and Advance Programming available using Lego MINDSTORMS software.

Who: students ages 9 to 14 (eligible for FLL).

When: 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. June 29 to 30 for Beginner Programming; 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. July 1 to 2 for Advanced Programming.

Where: Thunder Mountain High School.

Financial aid is available for all of JEDC's camps; cost should not be a barrier for any kids interested in attending.

Each camp is designed to be hands-on and fun. Kids will have the opportunity to make friends, explore and experiment. Some application deadlines are approaching quickly so apply now.

Juneau Fine Arts Camp

Dates: June 8 to 26.

Age group: kindergarten to seventh grade.

Juneau Dance Unlimited is taking registrations for the Juneau Fine Arts Camp to be held June 8-26 at the Juneau Douglas High School. The camp is for students entering kindergarten though seventh grade in the fall. Classes include book-binding, puppetry, wood art, creative dance, film-making, theater, beading, sculpture, paper-making, drawing, music, book arts, tumbling and much more. Juneau Youth Services camp

Dates: June 10 to Aug. 26.

Age group: preschool to middle-school.

Juneau Youth Services is offering a School-Based Services Summer Program for preschoolers through middle schoolers with social, emotional or academic struggles. Crimson Bear Youth Football Camp

Dates: June 11-13, 15-16.

Age group: 7 to 12.

Juneau-Douglas High School's Crimson Bear Youth Football Camp will be June 11 to 13 and 15 to 16 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Adair-Kennedy Memorial Park football field. It is available for ages 7 to 12 with a limit of 80 participants. Cost is $95 or $115 with early dropoff. Applications are due five days prior to camp. Outdoor Explorers

Start date: June 15.

Age group: 7 to 12.

The 2009 Outdoor Explorers Summer youth nature day camp will be held in nine sessions held 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Fridays.

Session 1: For ages 7 to 9, held June 15 to 19. Session 2: For ages 10 to 12, held June 22 to 26. Session 3: For ages 7 to 9, held June 29 to July 3. Session 4: For ages 7 to 9, held July 6 to 10. Session 5: For ages 10 to 12, held July 13 to 17. Session 6: For ages 7 to 9, held July 20 to 24. Session 7: For ages 7 to 9, held July 27 to 31. Session 8: For ages 10 to 12, held Aug. 3 to 7. Session 9: For ages 7 to 9, held Aug. 10 to 14.

A shuttle leaves Harborview Elementary School at 8:30 a.m. and returns about 20 minutes after the end of the day's activities. Members cost $165, and non-members cost $195. Scholarships are available.

Crystal Lake Day Camp

Dates: June 15 to Aug. 21.

Age group: 10 to 13.

The U.S. Forest Service is hosting Crystal Lake Day Camp for eight weeks from June 15 to Aug. 21. It will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. Based out of Dredge Lake, Crystal Lake Day Camp is an opportunity for 10- to13-year-olds to explore nature and practice scientific data collection. There are seven different weekly themes, and kids can return for multiple weeks. Cost is $125 per week with a 10 percent discount for four-day advance registration. Family discounts available. Design Discover Research

Dates: June 20 to July 2.

Age group: Grades 10 to 12.

This year the University of Alaska Southeast is launching their Design Discover Research program. The program gives students entering grades 10 to12 a chance to study marine and enviromental science at two different field locations in Southeast Alaska. It runs from June 20 to July 2 with the students spending the first five days at the UAS preparing and then seven days at either Glacier Bay National Park or the NOAA research facilities at Little Port Walter on Baranof Island. A minimum of 2.5 grade-point average required. The cost is $1,500, but financial aid is available through the Junea Economic Development Council. Summer art classes

Start date: July 6.

Age group: 3 to adult.

The Canvas community art studio and gallery will offer a variety of single and multiple day events throughout summer and for all ages.

Children: Available July 6 to 9 are "Act One: Storytelling through Movement," for ages 3 to 4 with a parent, from 9:30 to10:30 a.m., and "Act Two: Stories, Movement and Clay," for ages 5 to 6, from 9:30 a.m. to noon. They cost $40 each.

Ages 6 to 12: "Glass, Clay and Storytelling" will take place from 9 a.m. to noon July 20 to 24. Cost is $125. "Saori Weaving, Glass, and Clay for Kids" will be from 9 a.m. to noon July 27 to 31. Cost is $125.

Ages 6 to 14: "Saori Weaving, Glass, and Clay for Kids" will be from 9 a.m. to noon July 27 to 31. Cost is $125.

Ages 8 to 14: "Drawing and Watercolor for Kids" will take place from 1:30 to 3:30 pm. July 20 to 24 Cost is $95.

Teens and adults: "Writing and Performing Personal Stories" will be Tuesday and Thursday, July 7 and 9, 14 and 16, and 21 and 23, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Cost is $35. Also adults (teens welcome), "Teapots and Cups" will take place from 6 to 9 p.m. Thursdays from July 9 to 30. Cost is $115.

"Thriving with Loss for Individuals" will be on Mondays from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. July 6 to 20. Cost is $45.

For all ages: Single-day classes include "Mini Monsters" from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. July 11, "Clay Masks" from 2 to 5 p.m. July 11, and "Clay Windchimes" from 10 a.m. to noon, 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. and 3 to 5 p.m. on July 12. Each costs $25.

Adults: "Beginning Wheel" will take place in three classes: two three-week classes, held on Mondays from 6 to 9 p.m. July 6 to 20 or on Saturdays from 2 to 5 p.m. July 18 to Aug. 1; or one six-week class, held on Mondays from 6 to 9 p.m. July 27 to Aug. 31. Three-week classes cost $155. Six-week class is $210.

"Try the Wheel" will be held from 2 to 5 p.m. Sundays, July 19 and 26. Each class costs $45.

Three-week "Hand Building with Clay" class will be from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturdays from July 18 to Aug. 1. Cost is $115.

Summer Theatre Academy

Dates: July 13 to Aug. 7.

Age group: third grade and up.

Northern Lights Junior Theatre is holding a Summer Theatre Academy for students to hone their theatre skills. It takes place Monday through Friday from 1 to 4:30 p.m., from July 13 to Aug. 7, at the Nugget Mall. Students completing grades three up are eligible with 25 seats available. Thunder Mountain Sports Camps

Start date: July 13.

Age group: 5 to 18.

Thunder Mountain High School will host three soccer camps and one baseball camp. Wee Soccer Camp, for ages 5 to 7, is July13 to17 from 9 a.m. to noon. Cost is $75. Soccer Camp, for ages 7 to 8, is July 20 to 24 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., and for ages 9 to12, it takes place from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Cost is $100. Advanced Soccer Camp, for ages 10 to 12, is July 27 to 31 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., and for ages 12 to 18, it takes place from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Cost is $100. All soccer camps take place at Thunder Mountain High School field, with an alternative Wee camp from 1 to 4 p.m. at Savikko Park.

Baseball Camp, for ages 6 to13, is July 27 to 31 from 9 a.m. to noon at Dimond Park. Cost is $75. Participants need to bring their own equipment, indoor and outdoor shoes, lunch or snack and a water bottle.

Girl Scout camps

Princess of Pines Day Camp

Dates: July 9-10.

Age group: Girls entering first and second grades.

At Princess of Pines Day Camp, girls entering first and second grades can

use their imagination to be a Princess of the Pines. Campers will enjoy

fairy-themed arts and crafts, get a little messy, try something new, play

games, etc. Camp is held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. July 9 and 10 at Chapel by

the Lake. Free bus service from Douglas, downtown and Lemon Creek is

available. Cost is $20 for all days. Late registration, after June 22, is

$30.

Mountain Do Day Camp

Dates: July 6-8.

Age group: Girls entering third through sixth grades.

At Mountain Do Day Camp, girls will make new friends, have a lot of fun, & enjoy mountain-themed arts and crafts, get a little messy, try something new, play games, sing songs and earn genuine Girl Scout patches. For girls entering third through sixth grades, camp is held 9 a.m. To 3 p.m. July 6 to 8 at Chapel by the Lake, with an overnight on July 8 and pick-up on July 9. Bus service is available. Camp fees are $ 30 for all days. Late registration, after June 22, is $40.

Camp Feather Winds

Dates: July 19-24.

Age group: Girls entering seventh through 12th grades.

Participants in Camp Feather Winds will experience canoeing, kayaking, hiking and fishing; archery; arts and crafts; skits and sports; outdoor skills including fire-building, animal tracking, knife safety and cooking; and special high-adventure experience. For girls entering seventh through 12th grades, camp will be held July 19 to 24. Cost for registered Girl Scouts in Juneau is $ 230 before June 15 and $ 250 after. Cost for registered Girl Scouts outside of Juneau is $ 210 before June 15 and $ 230 after. Girls not registered will need to include a membership form and a $10 membership fee in addition to camp fees.

High Adventure Camp

Dates: July 17-19.

Age group: Girls entering seventh through 12th grades.

High Adventure Camp takes place at SAGA’s Eagle Valley Center, where girls will take on the low and high ropes challenge courses, camp in tents, mountain bike to a glacier, set up and complete a tyrolean traverse, hike off trail with map and compass, learn to do outdoor cooking and practice wilderness first aid skills in a mock rescue scenario. Girls also will practice sea kayaking skills by paddling from SAGA to Camp Feather Winds, where adventures will continue.
