ANCHORAGE - When Jeff Johnson looked outside his Eagle River home and saw a black bear scratching around the chicken coop. He went out with a garden hoe to scare the critter away.
When he got to the coop, he heard his six chickens squawking but saw no sign of the bear. That is, until he looked in the window.
Johnson saw the about 150-pound bear sitting on the floor, gobbling a chicken.
So he blocked off the small window the bear apparently used, his son called the police and handed him a shotgun just in case. When the bear attempted escape, Johnson wounded him and police officers later killed the bear.
State wildlife officials have decided it was a legitimate case of defense of life or property. Johnson says he regrets having to kill the bear.
