Popular dog park facing new disputes

ANCHORAGE - A popular dog park where canines can run and cool off with a swim in the summer is feeling the heat.

The problem is a lack of parking, the perennial issue of too many owners not picking up after their dogs and people being attacked or bitten by dogs.

The University Lake Park, one of the city's five original off-leash dog zones, has no parking area, except a small pullout that can perhaps hold eight to 10 cars.

Don Bantz, president of nearby Alaska Pacific University, has asked the mayor to take immediate action. Mayor Dan Sullivan says it might be time to rethink the park.
