Rainy relay

Posted: Sunday, June 01, 2003

More than 120 resilient runners braved an at-times raging rainstorm Saturday morning to complete the 13th annual Sea Coast Relay.

Twenty-eight teams - most with five members, some with three or four - completed the five-leg, 21.6-mile course from Eagle Beach to Skaters' Cabin off Montana Creek Road.

Exchange points between legs were at the Shrine of St. Therese, Lena Beach Recreation Area, Auke Village Recreation Area and the Egan Library at the University of Alaska Southeast's Auke Lake Campus.

The winning team in the wet conditions was the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse - George Johnson, Shawn Miller, Brian Goettler and Wesley Brooks - which finished in 2 hours, 2 minutes and 10 seconds. Miller ran two legs for the team.

Following the race, participants enjoyed a potluck on the shore of Mendenhall Lake.

Race results will run in the Empire later this week.
