FAIRBANKS - Fairbanks police cited a 26-year-old woman suspected of shoplifting at a department store but decided against hauling her to jail.

The woman was accompanied by her 2-week-old infant.

A store employee Wednesday spotted the woman slipping cosmetics into the baby's diaper bag. The woman was stopped as she tried to leave with items valued at more than $270, including two lamps.

Fairbanks police Lt. Tara Tippett said it's up to the officer's discretion to arrest or cite a suspect for minor offenses.

Tippett said the officer decided on a citation because the infant is still being breast fed.

The woman had no prior record of shoplifting but Tippett said police have had contact with her in at least 30 other criminal and non-criminal investigations.
