No fare hikes planned for city buses

JUNEAU --An announcement Thursday by Capital Transit that Juneau bus riders were facing fare hikes and changes to VIP passes -- and that the city would take public comment -- was all a misunderstanding, according to city officials.

An article appeared in the Empire on Thursday describing in detail the changes as laid out in a Capital Transit news release dated May 31.

``It was a communication glitch,'' said Deputy City Manager Donna Pierce today. ``Apparently it wasn't clear to Capital Transit that a bus fare hike that had been talked about during early budget deliberations was no longer a consideration.''

Capital Transit Director John Kern said today there had been a ``miscommunication as to the direction of the assembly,'' and that regulations to change fares and passes had been rescinded this morning.

City Finance Director Craig Duncan said this morning that although the 25-cent fare hike was no longer on the table, Capital Transit would continue to oversee procedures -- such as those for issuing VIP passes -- with an eye to efficiency.
